[France/Belgium]. Hiver 1897 [Winter 1897]. Black cloth notebook containing 167 fabric samples, each measuring approximately 45 x 75 mm. Each sample is glued in and is accompanied by ink notations including a stock number. 175 x 115mm (7 x 4½"). 0.2kg. . French. Very good; some general wear to covers with some splitting along outer hinge; pages well-thumbed but with samples in a very well-preserved state; residue of glue where samples have been removed; some offsetting caused by some fabrics.
A fascinating handmade notebook filled with samples of fashion fabrics. The book is inscribed 'Hiver 1897' and is likely to have been a working document for a fabric salesman or a dressmaker working for a fashion house. Each fabric is accompanied by a stock number, some initials which may denote the fabric manufacturer, and a red number which may indicate the cost of the fabric (sometimes there are alternate numbers for 'Coul' [Colour] and 'Noir' [Black]). The fabrics are remarkably vibrant with a range of geometric, floral and monotone patterns. Materials include satin, silk, organza and chiffon. The notebook is a rare survival and an invaluable resource for designers and collectors.
