Norman Barrymaine.

Brussels. July 1958. Burgundy buckram self-bound file. 58 pages of typed manuscript [plus additional texts bound in at the rear]. English. 285 x 235mm. 0.7kg. . Good; light shelf wear to binder, a few small stains to front board; some light browning to typed pages.

An early typed manuscript draft for Norman Barrymaine's book The Story of Peter Townsend, published by Peter Davies in 1958. Barrymaine tells the story of the ill-fated love affair between Townsend and Princess Margaret, from his own viewpoint as a friend of the Group Captain. His purpose was to set down the facts before untruths became truths. The manuscript tells of Townsend's appointment as the King's equerry, his care of the two young Princesses, his love for Margaret, the political, constitutional and religious consequences of the match, and his eventual exile to Brussels. Much of the manuscript text is repeated directly in the published book, but with several additions.
