French, with English translation. Fine. The catalogue for the sale of the personal collection of the fashion couturier, Elsa Schiaparelli. 'The present collection comprises exemplary couture, with a highlight from her legendary 'Astrology' collection, exotic clothes from Schiaparelli's wardrobe that tell of her fascination with fabrics, motifs and styles of other cultures, and a range of furnishings, objects, and graphic works that vividly evoke her eclectic appetite for the decorative, the whimsical, and the exotic. We discover her fondness for surroundings filled with curiosities - bird-cages, ram's-horn desk ornaments, blackamoor figures, and decorative flourishes in rococo or baroque styles. Paintings and illustrations by her contemporaries remind us of the wonderful exchange of ideas that she enjoyed with a group of artists that included Dali, Bérard, Fini, Cocteau and Vertés.' (from the introduction).About half of the collection is comprised of Schiaparelli's clothes and accessories. Many of them are her own creations. There are also a number of Chinese, Moroccan and Turkish robes. Several photographs of the designer by Man Ray are included, as well as Horst's definitive portrait of her (which graces the cover). There are several illustrations, including fashion drawings by Bérard and Vertés.
