The Open Photography shows were a biannual event held in Nottingham since 1974. Photographers were invited to submit their work for exhibition. The 1978 show was selected by John Szarkowski, Curator of Photography Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the painter R.B. Kitaj; it was shown in Nottingham and at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The catalogues reproduce many of the photographs and provide short biographies of the artists. Photographers featured include Robert Mapplethorpe, Gerry Badger, David Butterworth, Mac Campeanu, Brian Griffin, Roger Mayne, Karen O'Rouke, Anya Teixeira, Peter Turner and John Kippin.
