Stephen Gill is known for his documentary photography focussing on the Hackney Wick area of East London, as well as his self-published books which are as much art objects as photography books.

Gill describes Warming Down -' [it] features images taken in Hackney Wick and is hopefully (maybe) the last in what was a six year obsession exploring and photographing in and around Hackney Wick with bicycle and camera.' Gill takes an ex Hackney Library book (with its stamps, binding, ticket and marks) and inserts photographic images and text related to the Hackney enivornment. The juxtaposition of the musical score and the grainy images of East London, together with the pressed-plants, provide a pleasing narrative. The book gives the reader a real piece of Hackney in their hands.
