London. Weldons Ltd. n.d. [c.1936]. Wrappers. 46 pages. Illustrated throughout with b&w line drawings with a double-page colour spread. 300 x 235mm (11¾ x 9¼"). 0.15kg. . English. Very good; some wear to wrappers, some creasing, rubbing to spine, a couple of small areas of loss to front wrapper, 8cm tear along spine at the base; browning to pages, a couple of ink marks to fore-edge and rear wrapper, the whole has been lightly folded in half at some point but now lies flat.
A marvellous 1930s trade catalogue of fancy dress designs. Weldon's had a large shop in London selling fancy dress costumes and design patterns. This catalogue illustrates nearly 300 designs "for Carnival Pageant and Gala" and the paper patterns were available to purchase for One Shilling each. The costumes are very much of their time. Leslie Howard as "Romeo", Cocktail Lady, Big Business, Chivers' Marmalade, Bird's Custard, Lyons' Swiss Roll and Yardley's Lavender are ripe for a revival. The presence of Britain and Her Empire and other racial stereotypes highlight how attitudes have changed over the years.
