The definitive book on buttons, their design and their history, now very scarce. The book traces the history of buttons through China, the Renaissance, the Dutch, and the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a large section focussing on the 20th century, including makers such as Henri Hamm, Elsa Schiaparelli, Francois Hugo, Jacques Gautier, Line Vautrin and Paco Rabanne. Another part looks at materials used to make buttons, including wood, enamel, passementerie, leather, metal, glass, papier-mache, ceramic, ivory, etc. There is a chapter on artists, jewellers, ceramicists, painters, sculptors, glassmakers and designers who have designed buttons (including Edgar Brandt, Robert Goossens, Paul Poiret, Maurice de Vlaminck, Alexandre Noll, Fernand Leger, Sonia Delaunay, Lucie Rie, Rene Lalique and Garouste & Bonetti). The book ends with designs by contemporary makers, button curiosities and a bibliography.
