An examination of Picasso's sketchbooks and their place in the development of the artist's ideas. On his death Picasso left 175 sketchbooks, filled with drawings created during a career that spanned more than sixty years. They offer a unique insight into the development of his painterly ideas. Six of the sketchbooks are reproduced in full and there are many illustrations from the remaining books. There are contributions by Claude Picasso, Francoise Gilot and others, and a complete catalogue of the 175 sketchbooks.
