William Boyd's biography of the American abstract expressionist Nat Tate, forgotten by the art world since his early death and ripe for re-evaluation. The biography was in fact a literary hoax, with Boyd himself havng created many of the artworks featured in the book. David Bowie (who published the book under his 21 Publishing imprint), Gore Vidal and John Richardson were all in on the joke. The hoax calls to mind the Bruno Hat affair of the Bright Young Things.
