Early photographs of Californian surfing taken by surf photographer Don James. After James death, 200 images were discovered at the back of his desk. They were all taken during a one month period during the Summer of 1937 when he was just 16. At the time there were only about 200 surfers in California and James took these action shots as a record and explanation of the new sport that he and his friends were so passionate about. Thirty eight of the photographs are reproduced here.
