William Chappell (1907-1994) was heavily involved in English ballet of the mid-twentieth century being a dancer, designer and director. He worked closely alongside Frederick Ashton and Ninette de Valois. Studies in Ballet is an insider's survey of the state of ballet after the second world war. Chappell recounts his memories, he explores the mental and physical state of a dancer, and he discusses the possibilities for ballet's future. The text is accompanied by his own masterful drawings and photographs, and the whole is graced with a striking graphic dust jacket.
